Autoimmune Disorders

Friday, May 13, 2016

We trust our immune system to help fight and build up resistance to illnesses and intruders in our body. Unfortunately sometimes our body’s systems don’t work like they should. Autoimmune disorders affect approximately 1 in 5 people across the world. The disorder can work in two ways. Either through hyper activity or abnormally low activity of the immune system.
In cases of over activity, the body attacks and damages its own tissue. In response to a trigger, the immune system begins producing antibodies that attack the body instead of fighting the infection or foreign substance. Examples of this include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Since there are so many variations of autoimmune disorders, symptoms will vary. Common symptoms include pain, fatigue, and fever. Some variations will include more physically visible symptoms including rashes and welts. This version of the disorder can flare up at any time but especially so after recovering from any virus or illness. Your immune system may not know to stop and continue to attack parts of your body that are normal and healthy.
When the immune system has abnormally low activity, it allows more intruders and viruses into your body. It also has a harder time fighting them off as well as dealing with infections. This version can be especially dangerous since your body will not have a strong line of defense to ward off any major illnesses. People with this form of autoimmune disorder have to be very careful and try to protect themselves from coming in contact with anything that could prove to be dangerous.
The cause of autoimmune disease is unknown and there is not a cure. However there are many medications available to help with symptoms and to suppress flare-ups. If you feel that you may have an autoimmune disease or experiencing any common symptoms, visit your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor will most likely perform a blood test to determine if you are in fact dealing with an autoimmune disorder. Be sure to take any medications that you are prescribed regularly even if you are not dealing with a flare up.
